There are other ways which don’t involve Winclone, which you can find in some long threads over at MacRumours. This method is documented on the Winclone site. Wouldn’t matter if the initial Bootcamp partition was very small as Winclone expands it to use the whole of the T3. There was a regedit required before making the image. I did it by creating the Bootcamp partition on the host machine first, then using Winclone to make an image which I restored to the Samsung. I had mine on a Samsung T3 SSD from a MacBook Pro for a while, but can’t see that the host would matter. There are ways of putting the Bootcamp partition on an external. Plus it sounded like an interesting project, and would let me know if it's worth it to spend the money to have it opened up and the drives upgraded. My hope was to have a backup plan in case I run into issues with OSX with my work. Thanks for the link, I should have mentioned this is a hand me down and one of the original 5k iMac's so warranty isn't an issue. There are also virtual machine environments (VMWare Fusion, Parallels Desktop) that can run Windows from within macOS. OWC Rocket Yard – Can APFS be used with Time Machine, Boot Camp, and File Vault macOS can also boot from external SSDs should you wish to devote nearly all of the internal SSD to Windows.Įither way, you might want to read the following article, especially the part about needing to use Startup Manager to switch back from Windows to macOS. The 512 GB SSD option is not all that expensive, and if you divided the SSD in half, 256 GB for Windows is more than you'd get out of splitting any Fusion Drive. If you have not bought the Macintosh yet, it might make more sense to custom-order one with a SSD. Doing all that for only 32 GB plus a slowdown on the macOS side would be like squeezing blood from a stone. Another consideration is that while the 2 and 3 TB Fusion Drives have a 128 GB SSD, the 1 TB Fusion Drive has only a 32 GB one. There is someone who claims to have done it – but you'll be on your own as to getting it to work, and dealing with any problems that come up.

Partition Spinning drive so OSX can have ~250GB of space and the remainder would be exFAT so both OS's can read and write to it.

So I'm wondering if the following plan is possible: I might be getting an iMac 5k soon with a Fusion drive and while I don't want to get rid of Mac OS there's a chance that I might need to use Windows as my primary OS to keep down the headaches.
